Words cannot really convey the spirit of joy that filled the Great Hall on Saturday night as we celebrated the Derby directed and inspired Christmas event. We were in an Advent wonderland as we entered the Great Hall thanks to all the hard work of WAM and those who helped hang the greens and decorate the Christmas tree. Outside the new signage prepared by Greg Sullivan announced to everyone that Pine Valley Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is a Church of All. Thank you, one and all, for the many ways you brought the Spirit of this season to life in our community.
I posted last Sunday’s sermon on line for those who are interested in reading it. I drew on Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poem, “I Am Waiting” and some of his other work as well as the Gospel of Matthew as I prepared this sermon.
Sunday, December 10, our theme is Peace. My sermon title, The Promise of Peace, seems timely given the heightened state of anxiety in the world these days and the growing threat of war. For starters, I urge you to visit the website of the Council of Concerned Scientists. You will find a wealth of information and a letter you can send to our members of Congress.
Our readings for Sunday are Isaiah 40:-11 and the Gospel of Mark 1: 1-18. I will also draw on the poetry of Robert Frost: “God’s own descent/Into flesh meant/As a demonstration/That supreme merit/Lay in risking spirit/In substantiation.”
