Often, our payment for food provides the only meal some children receive in a given day. Many of these
children are orphans due to HIV/AIDS.
By the end of 2007, the UN Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS reports that
91,000 children in Malawi were living with HIV, and over half a million children had been orphaned by AIDS.12

| The Republic of Malawi is in southeastern Africa. Lake Malawi borders the country on the
east, with Zambia to the NW, Tanzania to the NE,
and Mozambique on the other borders. With high
infant mortality rates and a life expectancy of only 43 years, disease and
hunger are rampant. The per capita income is $800 annually, making
Malawi one of the poorest nations on the planet.
Pine Valley Christian Church in Wichita,
Kansas, established a
relationship
with Malawi through two sisters who work
tirelessly to bring health and hope to the people of Malawi.
The Honorable Gertrude Mhango,
a pharmacist and member of the Malawian Parliament, and her sister Dr.
Kholiwe Mkandawire, a
veterinarian, established a feeding program for school children in
2005.

|
The program provides hundreds
of children with porridge of maize and soya powder, sometimes the only meal
the children receive each day. In
addition to the children’s food program, on-going efforts include: planting
of fruit trees, education, and providing for other urgent needs.
